stormstar , as the crispness of autumn air began to dance through the very forest itself, stormstar watched closely as the various trees prepared themselves for winter. the pine, of course, would still remain the same, even moons later, but as the maple and oak trees began to turn, the sloping landscape of forestclan created a beautiful painting out of itself, giving the large grey tabby tom another chance to thank starclan for his life. as his paws carried him across the smooth mixture of dirt and sand, his eyes remained raised to the sky, a smile sprawled across his happy, yet occasionally intimidating face. his mouth fell open slightly, drawing in the air so that he might take a whiff, but none of the scents seemed to really be out of place. to the east, the air grew saltier, and the plant life changed slightly. the ground also grew sandier, and next to the sand - he shuddered - was the sea water. despite the island in the east that allowed his clanmates to communicate with starclan, stormstar would have forever avoided the water. of course, now there was something else standing in his way. his stomach grew ill with anxiousness, churning its depths all as hunger also ravaged it. ' i should have eaten before i left camp.' he silently scolded himself, but shook his head at his thoughts. " i have other problems right now,
" he sighed, squinting up directly at the sun. it was nearing sun-high, though there was still quite a bit of time to go. his thoughts fell back to the problem at hand. was it really a problem? ' yes.' he answered quickly, scowling a bit and settling his large form down into a sitting position. so, there was a new clan. was that idea really so foreign? ' yes.' he answered again quickly. there'd always been one clan! he didn't understand. how were there other clans? " the world's bigger than just forestclan." he murmured quietly, blinking his pale green eyes, glancing around himself at the leaflitter. stormstar's head jerked to the side as a twig snap alerted him to the presence of another. " who's there?" he nearly barked, his nerves on edge since there had been several scuffles with the other clan already. ' star clan help me.' he prayed, as his focus turned to another cat. ooc: lol at the colors; they're gross [/blockquote][/blockquote]

minnowstar
she had decided to settle here days ago, with the tough, tall grasses brushing her short coat and the salty sea breeze crying out in her ears. they had scouted the land, sought out a source of food and drinkable water, kept on their toes by the threat of unknown predators. finding none, minnowstar had declared this the clan's new home. whether they liked it or not wasn't much of her concern, for it was a safe territory and looked as though it could support a full clan of warriors.
not only that, but she caught wind of another clan not far away, and that meant starclan couldn't be far off. she sent forth scouts to discover what this strange clan was all about, and the scouts had been caught. forestclan, too, had done their best to quench their curiousity about this new clan moving in on their land. minnowstar hadn't left them off lightly, and now both forestclan and cloudclan had gained knowledge of each other. now what to make of that?
minnowstar was on a mission, her head tucked dutifully into her chest, shamrock gaze peering defiantly ahead. alone, she would make her way into forestclan's territory to demand answers. it was obvious that their leader, who she found out was called stormstar, was playing avoidance tactics. that, of course, wouldn't fly with the confrontational tabby lass. no, she wanted answers. now. so, with her long tail held high with pride, she most no-nonsense expression locked in place, she watched as the shrubbery around her grew into towering trees. pines, mostly, leaving the forest to its emerald hues, but dotted delicately across the land were patches of golden and scarlet of leafy trees, receding quickly into the approaching paws of winter.
forestclan's scent markers were vague and old- they probably didn't use them much without any neighbors around. she rolled her eyes- smart thinking, guys. but she passed them with little notice anyway. she wanted nothing more than to be in the heart of forestclan's land. it was dangerous, of course, if a patrol should come along and attack her without mercy- she had no extra lives (if those even existed, she was convinced they were a myth). her clan would be left to chaos, and after everything she'd done for them, that sure as hell wasn't gonna happen.
minnowstar felt the breeze pushing toward her, instead of away from her, and opened her mouth to detect the scent of a single cat, male, not far off. looking around, she found a twig and, taking one end in her jaws, she snapped it in two at the other end with a forepaw. she dropped it and moved forward, and found another to snap in the same manner. at least this way they wouldn't be shocked when she emerged from the brush. who's there? she heard in deep tones, and walked forward to make her confrontation, and looked up to meet the gaze of an enormous dark tabby tom. without skipping a beat, minnowstar cleared her throat and declared. "you may call me minnowstar, little guy. I'm here for your leader. take me to him. I've got just a couple things to tell him."

just as easily as the sun set at dusk and returned at dawn, she slipped into his sight. his eyes widened slightly, his mouth growing dry as he clenched his jaw shut tightly. her pretty gray, mottled pelt molded neatly into her sleek, lithe bodice, and her eyes - oh those eyes! his hear leapt in wonder, bringing himself quickly up to his feet, his head tilting slightly to the side. before he had a chance to speak, the she-cat's words, short, curt, and almost cold, had shot quickly through the air between them, and stormstar's ears perked as she introduced herself. 'minnowstar?' he thought, eyes widening as he dipped his head in respect to her. 'little guy?' he added, raising a brow at her and a mischievous grin crossing his face. "'take me to your leader'? sounds a little bit cliche to me, big girl." stormstar teased, whiskers twitching as his own joke.
a million different things that he could say raced through his mind, but he simply cocked a brow again. "oh yeah? what sort of things might they be?" he asked, his curiosity preceding his own introduction. "er, excuse me, that was rude. i'm not used to really having to be formal with anyone, except during ceremonies and stuff." he rambled before shaking his head and flicking his eyelids shut for a moment. as his dappled green eyes opened to meet her own green eyes, they crinkled slightly with friendly delight. "my name is stormstar. it's a pleasure to meet you, minnowstar." stormstar meowed amiably, his tail tip flicking this way and that. "so," he started. "what to tackle first?" he joked, his benevolent purr rumbling from deep within his chest as he watched her carefully, curiously, his heart thrumming alive with a new sort of beat.
he looked up at the pine trees above them and watched the blue sky as white clouds passed through before returning his gaze to where it fell level with hers. "i'm new to this sort of thing." he admitted, then stopped himself. "er, i mean, i've been leader for awhile. i'm just..new to...this whole..other clan?" he struggled with his words, punctuating his sentence with a short nervous laugh. his eyebrows furrowed suddenly. "are you new to this? ah, both leading and, ah, two clans and the whole bit, i mean." stormstar murmured, questions filling his mind to the brim. "borders we can always decide later, unless that's what you're the most concerned with? forgive me, i'm going to need some help from you just as much as you're going to need it from me." he mewed apologetically, shaking his head once more, his eyes glittering as he chuckled nervously again.

minnowstar
upon this first encounter, the small she-cat couldn't help but be a big dumbfounded by the disposition of this strange tom. after all, she was trespassing, she was rude, and she was tiny. were she in his position, she would have kicked the intruder's ass and sent them on their merry way. living with a new neighbor will do these softies some good, she observed to herself, narrowing her eyes rather critically at the enormous dark tabby. she could see, by the sparkle in his chartruse eyes and the curve of his broad mouth that he was a tom of good nature, but that didn't change her position on him. a heart of gold rarely kept foxes out of the nursery, after all.
when he opened his mouth, she barely resisted the urge to simply order him to shut up, and even managed to keep from rolling her eyes. making an enemy of this oversized furball wouldn't benefit her very much. then, as if the dam broke, his mouth opened and hardly shut for the next several moments- she didn't know how to interject, so she didn't. the gray tabby simply seated herself comfortably among the leaf-mold and needle carpet of the forest and listened to him with her chin inclined proudly, her gaze steady. what sort of things? wow, the brightest star in the sky right here, she sighed inwardly, wondering how a dolt could possibly ask what an intruding leader might need to speak from another leader about. she curled her tailtip and lowered her head, pricking her ears when he finally gave his name. hm, so this was stormstar after all. though she could have guessed that by his looks, once he started babbling she would have hardly thought this delightfully eloquent gentlemen would be leading any clan. though her thoughts were harsh and dry, she was careful to keep her expression void of emotions.
"the pleasure is all mine, stormstar." she commented huskily, giving a slow blink. after a quiet moment passed, she dipped her head to return the respect, though he'd hardly earned it thus far. twas customary to foolishly respect a cat you didn't want to dislike you before their having earned it. questionable custom, she thought. then suddenly, he was at it again- more words streaming out of his mouth than she had bargained for. again, minnowstar waited with patience until he had finished before bothering to get in a word edgewise. he sounded like an apprentice the day after being given a mentor. starclan above, minnowstar sighed, though she doubted anyone in the heavens was listening.
"excuse my lack of manners, but I'm going to have to ask you to hush for a moment," she hadn't meant to be so rudely bold, of course, it just spilled out, surprising a short laugh out of her. clearing her throat and regaining her composure, the young she-cat finally sighed again and went on. "ok, borders are not decided later. we decide them now. I want you to know that cloudclan is not gonna mosey on off anytime soon. is that understood? borders are the one thing that will keep our warriors from tearing each others' throats out, or, of course, having litters with one another." so she wasn't well-versed in tactfulness, but she was sure she was getting her point across.
"and no, I'm not particularly new to either." just a white lie, she assured herself a bit sardonically. "cloudclan has bordered another clan from the very beginning," she meowed, unable to keep the bitter tone from her cold, quiet voice, "but it's a story for another time. will you come with me? I believe what should be tackled first is indeed the borders."
with that, she stood abruptly and headed back the way she had come, assuming the tabby tom was following. "I see you already have borders, sort of," she remarked over her shoulder as she went, and ended up pausing at the very place she mentioned- where the forestclan scent seemed to begin. she faced the tom and twitched an ear, still successfully keeping any expression from her visage, "if you'd like this to be the official border, I can accept that. as far as I know, cloudclan will not require any of your forest space. should we find prey impossibly low among the dunes and brush, you'll be the first to know," she imformed him, if not a big ominously. minnowstar was unsure herself as to whether or not she'd lower herself to theft or lower herself to pitiful begging- it was a tough call. she went on after a second's hesitation- "this line can simply be continued to the dunes around the twolegplace and down to the rockyplace, straight through. that will work for you, correct?" her no-nonsense manner slipped for a moment after she stopped talking, and simply looked into his eyes- they were round and friendly, but almost the same shade of green as her own. how very strange.

his entire body tensed at her intensity, that infuriating way she was beginning to order him around. his ears flicked dismissively as minnowstar interrupted him. "sure, sure." he snapped a bit too quickly, but followed her as began explaining a bit about borders. as she pointed out the edges of forestclan's territory, his fur bristled as he watched her pretty tabby form as she insulted him in a way stormstar simply did not understand, well, yet, anyway. he began to frown a bit as she began talking of prey in the sand and brush. eh, he'd never really cared much for the land near the ocean. however, as she began splitting off the two territories, he grew uneasy, his stomach aching a bit, and this time not from hunger.
"ah, well, yes, but i-" he tried, squinting his eyes a bit as he struggled to find his words, which, for him, was qutie an incredible feat. he exhaled sharply, blowing the air out quickly before locking his gaze back onto hers. he took another large breath before speaking, his tone quite serious as he spoke. "well, as you can see further out, well, there's an island. and, on that island, ah.. that is where we contact starclan." the large tom tried to explain, but then he gave her a look of intense curiosity. "your clan does..believe in starclan, correct? i. i just don't know if i'd feel comfortable.." he frowned deeply. "well, you see, you would be in between my clan and starclan, really." he squinted up at the sun before looking back down at her. "we'd need some..safe way to pass through; so as not to cause any unnecessary conflicts, like the ones we've already been experiencing. you can agree to that, no?" he asked, cocking a brow as his green eyes grew questioning.

minnowstar
she was paying this stranger very little attention in her way, as she so often did. she wasn't necessarily inconsiderate, she just wanted to get this unpleasant business finished with and return to her clan to oversee the last leg of building camp. it would be a tremendous moment when the dens were all, at last, established, and she wanted to be a part of the celebration rather than end up stuck out here playing games of diplomacy with a tom who, if she was being honest with herself, she cared little about. of course she would be happier without insulting his pride, she'd be willing to sacrifice their nonexistant friendship for the sake of getting home quicker.
now, however, she was peering up at the goliath tabby and regretted being so snappish. only faint regret of course, but nevertheless she had seen his happy-go-lucky demeanor vanish before her eyes, and that frightened her a bit. she hadn't forgotten this stranger could remove her ears from her head with one swipe if she wasn't quick and careful. however, though he didn't seem particularly pleased to be in her company anymore, he still didn't strike her as a hostile type of fellow. she was fast anyway- she didn't have anything to worry about as far as her own safety was of concern. on the other paw, it would be better to start out on the right foot with forestclan rather than make an enemy of them. minnowstar shook her head inwardly- no, there would be time for friendship at a later date. now she just needed stormstar to understand that neither she nor cloudclan were forces to be underestimated.
she blinked when he finally opened his mouth, after seeing trouble brewing in his gaze for several heartbeats. but I- he started, then lost himself for a moment before recollecting his thoughts and going on. "right, the island. I did glance it, but I haven't gone quite as far yet." she bobbed her head, keeping up with his train of thought. "oh please, stormstar. if you think my clan is blocking your way to starclan figuratively as well as physically then your spiritually must be weak indeed. I do not mean to preach, but starclan is everywhere. most importantly, they're above your head and in your dreams as you sleep. my clan will not block your way from contacting them, however." she flicked her tail dismissively. "we will mark a direct path from your border to the island with sticks, stones, footprints and such. should your clan's scent stray from the path your safety may be in question, but as long as there is no spying and no hunting being done on cloudclan's land I don't mind if you and yours cut across to get to starclan's island." the little female meowed with finality, swishing her tail once more.
"however, on the subject of starclan," she went on, and suddenly the words were caught in her throat. they felt thick and forbidden, like sneaking honey from the medicine cat's den as a kit just because she liked the way it felt in her mouth and as it slid into her belly. it made her sick the first time she had it, just like speaking the next thing made her feel. at last, she spat the words almost with hostility, knowing this tom had to help her and she hated him for that, just for a moment. "I have not yet been granted my lives from starclan." she swallowed until the queasy feeling in her belly lessened, and then went on. "this makes my deputy invalid and makes my leadership a spot of danger for me, making cloudclan as a whole unstable." she looked at stormstar now, for the first time with her eyes brimming with feeling- a begging, imploring look almost. he simply had to help her, or where would her clan be?
